Fieldnotes

Local first notes with end to end encrypted sync between your devices

A desktop and mobile notes app that works fully offline and syncs through a relay that never sees your text. Built on Tidepool, which I contribute to.

Why another notes app

I wanted notes that open instantly on a plane, sync when I land, and stay unreadable to whoever runs the server. The apps that did all three were closed source, so I could not check the last claim.

How it works

Every edit is an operation in a local log. Devices exchange encrypted operations through a relay, which stores only ciphertext and deletes it once every device has caught up. Conflicts merge automatically because the log is a CRDT, so two people editing the same list on two planes both keep their changes.

Working on Fieldnotes is how I ended up contributing to Tidepool. The log compaction work in Tidepool #278 started as a Fieldnotes bug report from a user with 11,000 notes.

Status

Fieldnotes is in public beta on macOS, Windows and iOS. The relay is open source and runs on a 5 dollar server.
